Overview
Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE) is a viral infection of the central nervous system transmitted through the bite of infected Ixodes ticks. The ticks are found in forested and grassy areas across Central Europe, Scandinavia, the Baltic states, Russia, and parts of northern Asia. Most TBE infections cause a mild flu-like illness, but approximately 1 in 3 infected people develop encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis. There is no specific treatment — management is supportive. About 1–2% of cases with neurological involvement are fatal, and up to 10% of survivors experience long-term neurological problems. At Holborn Clinic, we provide the TicoVac vaccine and can offer an accelerated 2-dose schedule for last-minute travellers.
