Overview

Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection caused by Salmonella typhi. It is spread through contaminated food and water, and is most common in parts of the world where sanitation and water treatment are less reliable. Symptoms include sustained high fever, headache, abdominal pain, and either constipation or diarrhoea. Without treatment, typhoid can lead to serious complications including intestinal perforation. The WHO estimates 11–21 million cases of typhoid occur globally each year, with 128,000–161,000 deaths. South Asia is the highest-risk region, but cases also occur across sub-Saharan Africa, South-East Asia, and parts of Central and South America. At Holborn Clinic, we provide the Typhim Vi injectable vaccine — a single dose that provides protection for up to 3 years. This is often given alongside other travel vaccines (Hepatitis A, Rabies, DTP) in the same appointment.

Holborn Travel Clinic is inside Boutalls Pharmacy at 60 Lamb's Conduit Street, London WC1N 3LW, minutes from Holborn and Russell Square stations.

Who Needs This Vaccine?

  • Travellers visiting South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka) — the highest-risk region worldwide for typhoid.
  • Anyone travelling to sub-Saharan Africa, Central America, or South America where sanitation may be variable.
  • Backpackers, volunteers, and travellers who will eat street food or local produce outside of established hotels and resorts.
  • People visiting friends and relatives in endemic regions, who often stay longer and eat local food.
  • Travellers on longer trips (over 2 weeks) where cumulative exposure risk increases.

What to Expect

  • Your appointment takes approximately 15 minutes including a brief consultation.
  • The vaccine is given as a single injection in the upper arm.
  • Protection begins approximately 2 weeks after vaccination.
  • A booster is recommended every 3 years if you continue to travel to risk areas.
  • Typhoid vaccination is often combined with Hepatitis A in the same appointment — our pharmacist will advise on the best combination for your itinerary.

Typhoid Vaccine FAQ’s

Typhoid vaccination is not a legal entry requirement for any country, but it is strongly recommended by NaTHNaC and the NHS for travel to endemic areas. The risk is highest in South Asia — India alone accounts for a significant proportion of cases in returning UK travellers.
