Overview

Hepatitis A is a liver infection caused by the Hepatitis A virus. It spreads when tiny traces of infected faeces enter the mouth — often through contaminated food, water, or poor hand hygiene. It is more common in parts of the world where sanitation is less reliable. The vaccine is inactivated (not live) and is suitable for most adults. Protection begins to build within about two weeks of a single dose. At Holborn Clinic we can fit your vaccination around your travel dates and advise on any other vaccines you may need for the same trip.

Holborn Travel Clinic is inside Boutalls Pharmacy at 60 Lamb's Conduit Street, London WC1N 3LW, minutes from Holborn and Russell Square stations.

Who Needs This Vaccine?

  • Travellers visiting countries where sanitation and water quality may be variable.
  • Backpackers, volunteers, and anyone eating street food or local produce abroad.
  • People visiting friends and relatives in higher-risk regions for longer stays.
  • Anyone who has not been vaccinated before and wants long-lasting protection.

What to Expect

  • A short consultation to confirm the vaccine is suitable and to answer your questions.
  • One injection into the upper arm; the visit usually takes around 15 minutes.
  • A booster dose may be offered after 6–12 months for extended protection — our pharmacist will advise.
  • You can normally continue with your day after the appointment; mild soreness at the site is common.

Side Effects

  • Very common: soreness, redness, or mild swelling at the injection site.
  • Common: headache, tiredness, or mild fever for a day or two.
  • Serious allergic reactions are rare; staff are trained to manage them.

Hepatitis A Vaccine FAQ’s

Ideally at least two weeks before departure so your body has time to start building protection. If you are travelling sooner, still book in — a single dose is often better than none, and our pharmacist will advise on timing.
