Description
Peru draws travellers to Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, Lima's food scene, Lake Titicaca, and the Amazon rainforest. Health preparation should account for altitude (Cusco is at 3,400m), tropical diseases in the Amazon, and food/water-borne infections. Yellow Fever vaccination is recommended for Amazon travel and may be required for onward travel to other South American countries.

Travel Health Tips for Peru
Practical tips to help you stay safe, healthy, and prepared throughout your trip.
Travel tip 1
- If visiting Cusco or Machu Picchu, acclimatise to altitude gradually. Consider Acetazolamide (altitude sickness tablets) — available at Holborn Clinic.
Travel tip 2
- Yellow Fever vaccination is not required for entry to Peru from the UK, but is strongly recommended for Amazon travel and may be required for onward travel to Brazil, Bolivia, or other countries.
Travel tip 3
- Drink only bottled water. Avoid ceviche and raw seafood from street stalls (established restaurants are generally safe).
Travel tip 4
- If visiting the Amazon, take malaria tablets and use DEET repellent — mosquito exposure is intense.
Travel tip 5
- Sun protection at altitude is critical — UV levels in Cusco are extreme due to the thin atmosphere.
When to Get Vaccinated
Yellow Fever is recommended at least 10 days before Amazon travel. Plan 6–8 weeks ahead for Rabies if trekking in remote areas. Altitude sickness medication (Acetazolamide) should be obtained before departure — we stock it at the clinic.
Best Time to Visit
May to October (dry season in the Andes — best for Machu Picchu and trekking). The Amazon is accessible year-round but drier from June to November. Lima is mild year-round. December to March is the wet season in the highlands.
