Overview

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection found in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. It is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, which bite primarily during the day. The WHO estimates 100–400 million dengue infections occur each year, making it one of the most common mosquito-borne diseases globally. Dengue vaccine availability in the UK is evolving. At Holborn Clinic, we stock the latest approved options and will assess your eligibility based on your infection history and travel plans. Regardless of vaccination status, mosquito bite prevention (DEET-based repellent, long clothing, air-conditioned accommodation) remains the primary defence against dengue.

Holborn Travel Clinic is inside Boutalls Pharmacy at 60 Lamb's Conduit Street, London WC1N 3LW, minutes from Holborn and Russell Square stations.

Who Needs This Vaccine?

  • Travellers who have had a confirmed previous dengue infection and plan to revisit endemic areas — they are at highest risk of severe dengue on re-infection.
  • Frequent travellers to dengue-endemic areas in South-East Asia, South Asia, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Long-stay travellers or expats in high-transmission areas.
  • Note: current dengue vaccines have specific eligibility criteria — our pharmacist will assess suitability based on your infection history and travel plans.

What to Expect

  • A consultation to assess your eligibility — current guidelines require evidence of previous dengue infection for some vaccines.
  • If eligible, the course is 2 doses given 3 months apart (Qdenga) as subcutaneous injections.
  • Mosquito bite prevention remains essential even after vaccination — no dengue vaccine provides 100% protection.

Side Effects

  • Common: injection site pain, headache, muscle pain, fatigue.
  • Uncommon: mild fever or joint pain for 1–2 days.
  • Serious side effects are rare. The vaccine is not suitable for everyone — screening is essential.

Dengue Fever Vaccine FAQ’s

Not currently. The Qdenga vaccine (TAK-003) is approved in the UK but has specific eligibility criteria. The earlier Dengvaxia vaccine is only approved for people with confirmed previous dengue. Our pharmacist will assess your suitability and advise on the best approach — including whether bite prevention alone is appropriate for your trip.
