Overview

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide. Most HPV infections clear naturally, but persistent infection with high-risk strains can lead to cervical cancer, anal cancer, throat cancer, and other cancers. HPV also causes genital warts. The HPV vaccine protects against 9 HPV strains — including the 7 high-risk strains responsible for approximately 90% of HPV-related cancers and the 2 strains that cause 90% of genital warts. At Holborn Clinic, we provide the HPV vaccine privately for adults outside the NHS-funded age groups.

Holborn Travel Clinic is inside Boutalls Pharmacy at 60 Lamb's Conduit Street, London WC1N 3LW, minutes from Holborn and Russell Square stations.

Who Needs This Vaccine?

  • Adults who did not receive HPV vaccination through the NHS school programme (introduced for girls in 2008, extended to boys in 2019).
  • Anyone aged 15–45 who wants protection against HPV-related cancers — cervical, anal, throat, penile, vaginal, and vulval.
  • Men who have sex with men (MSM) — at higher risk of HPV-related anal cancer. The NHS offers free vaccination to MSM up to age 45, but GP access can be slow.
  • Anyone with a new sexual partner or changing relationship status who wants comprehensive protection.

What to Expect

  • The course is 2 doses given 6–12 months apart (for those aged 15+). Each is an injection in the upper arm.
  • If you are aged 9–14, only 1 dose may be needed — our pharmacist will advise based on current guidance.
  • Each appointment takes approximately 15 minutes.
  • The vaccine works best before exposure to HPV, but can still provide benefit after exposure to some strains.

Side Effects

  • Very common: soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site.
  • Common: headache, mild fever, or dizziness shortly after vaccination.
  • Serious side effects are extremely rare. The HPV vaccine has been given to hundreds of millions of people worldwide.

HPV Vaccine FAQ’s

The HPV vaccine is licensed for use up to age 45. While the vaccine is most effective before first exposure to HPV, it can still provide protection against strains you have not yet encountered. Our pharmacist will discuss the benefits based on your age and circumstances.
