Overview

Cholera is an acute intestinal infection caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. It is spread through contaminated water and food, and causes severe watery diarrhoea that can lead to life-threatening dehydration within hours if untreated. Cholera remains endemic in many parts of the world and outbreaks occur regularly in areas with limited access to clean water. Dukoral is an oral cholera vaccine that also provides some protection against ETEC (enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli), the most common bacterial cause of travellers' diarrhoea. It is taken as a drink — no injection needed — making it a good option for needle-averse travellers. At Holborn Clinic, we stock Dukoral and can advise whether cholera vaccination is appropriate for your itinerary. For most tourist travel, the risk of cholera is low and vaccination is not routinely recommended — but for aid workers, long-stay travellers, and those visiting outbreak areas, it provides valuable additional protection.

Holborn Travel Clinic is inside Boutalls Pharmacy at 60 Lamb's Conduit Street, London WC1N 3LW, minutes from Holborn and Russell Square stations.

Who Needs This Vaccine?

  • Travellers visiting areas with active cholera outbreaks — currently parts of sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East.
  • Aid workers, healthcare workers, and volunteers working in refugee camps or disaster relief settings.
  • Travellers to areas with limited access to clean water and sanitation.
  • People who want additional protection against ETEC-related travellers' diarrhoea — the most common cause of upset stomach abroad.
  • Long-stay travellers to high-risk regions where cumulative exposure risk is significant.

What to Expect

  • Dukoral is an oral vaccine — you drink it mixed with a bicarbonate buffer solution. No injection required.
  • The course is 2 doses taken 1–6 weeks apart. Each appointment takes approximately 15 minutes.
  • You should not eat or drink for 1 hour before and 1 hour after taking the vaccine.
  • The course should be completed at least 1 week before travel.
  • A booster dose is recommended after 2 years if you continue to visit risk areas.

Side Effects

  • Common: mild stomach discomfort, nausea, or bloating — usually settles within a day.
  • Uncommon: diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, or headache.
  • Serious side effects are very rare. The vaccine does not contain live cholera bacteria.

Cholera Vaccine (Dukoral) FAQ’s

Dukoral provides some short-term protection (approximately 3 months) against travellers' diarrhoea caused by ETEC (enterotoxigenic E. coli), which is the most common cause. However, it does not protect against all causes of travellers' diarrhoea. Good food and water hygiene remains essential.
