Overview

Chikungunya is a viral infection transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes — the same mosquitoes that spread dengue and Zika. It causes sudden onset of fever and severe joint pain that can be debilitating and may persist for weeks, months, or even years in some cases. The Ixchiq vaccine (VLA1553) is the first chikungunya vaccine to be approved for human use. It is a single-dose live attenuated vaccine approved for adults aged 18 and over. At Holborn Clinic, we can assess your eligibility and administer the vaccine as part of your pre-travel preparation.

Holborn Travel Clinic is inside Boutalls Pharmacy at 60 Lamb's Conduit Street, London WC1N 3LW, minutes from Holborn and Russell Square stations.

Who Needs This Vaccine?

  • Travellers aged 18+ visiting chikungunya-endemic areas — including South-East Asia, South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean, and parts of South America.
  • Anyone travelling during rainy season when Aedes mosquito activity peaks.
  • Older adults — chikungunya joint symptoms tend to be more severe and prolonged in older age groups.
  • Travellers with pre-existing joint conditions who may be at higher risk of prolonged symptoms.

What to Expect

  • A single injection in the upper arm. The appointment takes approximately 15 minutes.
  • The Ixchiq vaccine is a live attenuated vaccine — screening for contraindications (immunosuppression, pregnancy) is required.
  • Protection builds within 2 weeks of vaccination.
  • Mosquito bite prevention measures should still be used alongside vaccination.

Side Effects

  • Very common: headache, fatigue, muscle pain, joint pain, fever — these can mimic mild chikungunya symptoms and usually resolve within days.
  • Common: injection site tenderness and redness.
  • As a live vaccine, it is not suitable for immunosuppressed individuals or pregnant women.

Chikungunya Vaccine FAQ’s

Chikungunya is a viral infection spread by the same Aedes mosquitoes that transmit dengue and Zika. The hallmark symptom is severe joint pain — the name comes from a Makonde word meaning 'to become contorted' — which can last weeks to months. There is no specific treatment; management is supportive.
